CONTRIBUTE
Thank you for your interest in Inside/Outside Southwest Magazine, a local’s guide to what’s really up in the Four Corners. We pride ourselves in running the best writing and photography our corners of the country have to offer. We work with both professionals and first-time writers and photographers, as long as the writers have an authentic and compelling story to tell and the photographers have crisp and irresistible photography.
WRITING
We are very open on subject and style as long as your story is previously unpublished and has something to do with the outdoors, recreation or culture of the Four Corners region of the Southwest. We welcome your best ideas and strongest queries.
Our feature stories, the premium writing in the magazine, generally run 750 to 3,000 words and have a strong photographic component. We occasionally run particularly powerful prose by itself, without photos, often with an illustration. We’re interested in stories that give deep insight into places and the people who pursue activities in our region. Controversial issues that affect our environment, the places we enjoy to recreate and visit, profiles of notable or unknown residents, new and well-known outdoor activities, and first-person accounts are fair game. Humorous or unusual tales are especially welcome.
We also run shorter, department pieces about new and developed destinations, books and music, relevant political events, gear, as well as back-of-the-book essays on nearly any topic relevant to our region. Check a current issue of the magazine for the length and style of pieces within particular departments and refine your query accordingly.
To submit, e-mail stories your query to editor@insideoutsidemag.com, and if we have an interest in your story we’ll get back to you.
By submitting to Inside/Outside Southwest, you agree to our Contributor Terms and Conditions. We buy First North American Serial Rights and One-Time Electronic Rights. Stories used in the magazine will also be published on InsideOutsideMag.com.
PHOTOGRAPHY
We are also very open on subject as long as your photography is previously unpublished (some exceptions) and has something to do with the outdoors, recreation or culture of the Four Corners region of the Southwest. We welcome your strongest images, and we have a soft spot for goofy stuff.
Digital submissions are preferred. Inside/Outside Southwest is not responsible for unsolicited submissions. All photo submissions are subject to Inside/Outside’s rates, terms and conditions. Inside/Outside Southwest does not accept photographers’ “Terms and Conditions” for any unsolicited slides, film or prints.
OUR COVERAGE AREA
We’re often asked how we define the boundaries of the Four Corners region. We define the region rather loosely as the area between a line connecting communities and areas at the edge of our coverage area. Starting at Green River, Utah, the line extends to the Grand Canyon of the Colorado to Arizona’s White Mountains to New Mexico’s Aldo Leopold Wilderness to the cities of Albuquerque and Taos to Colorado’s San Luis Valley to Fruita, Colo., connecting back at Green River. Furthermore, we don’t make a habit of it but we’re not opposed to covering topics from nearby (outside) places of interest, preferably to points that do not stretch too far beyond the described boundary a single tank of gas. We’ve visited Escalante National Monument in Utah, for example, and Arizona’s Salt River, New Mexico’s Fort Stanton Cave and Creed, Colorado. The places make sense to us to cover because our residents are interested in them, we do travel to them, and as such we cannot overlook them.
Thank you for your interest and support of Inside/Outside Southwest Magazine.
